Under the Pensions Act 2008, every employer in the UK must put certain staff into a pension scheme and contribute towards it. This is called ‘automatic enrolment’. If you employ at least one person you are an employer and you have certain legal duties. Your staging date is your deadline for getting auto enrolment set up. For existing businesses set up prior to Oct 17 you will already have staged by February 18. For new businesses employing staff from 1 Oct 17 your staging date will be the first day you employed someone and your auto enrolment duties will start from that date.
Can I do this myself?
In principle you don’t need to go through someone like us to get your scheme in place. In practice however, and from experience, we have had clients come to us after doing their best to do it themselves. In the end they have found they have wasted their time and money and been frustrated in the process. If clients do not wish to use one of the Pension Regulator recommended schemes, we can administrate alternative schemes set up by a third party or Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
